Aims of St Kenelm’s Church

St Kenelm's is an ancient parish church where we look to uphold traditional values whilst appreciating that services need to change to accommodate new styles of worship. This can be a challenge with a relatively small core congregation.

A look at the services on offer throughout the year illustrates what we hope is a good cross section of services. Being a rural church we realise the importance of marking the farming seasons and also celebrate, along with Harvest Festival, Rogationtide and Plough Sunday. A United Benefice Service is held on fifth Sundays.

The family is very important in the church. Children are welcome to all services and there are always activity sheets for children as well as a special communion book.  However, some are more “child friendly” and relaxed than others. A monthly Family Service is held on the third Sunday of each month, which is kept to 45 minute duration. A percussion band accompanies the final hymn at a Family Service. Despite efforts within the church the number of children attending services is still very small.

Pastoral Visiting Team

This is a team of parishioners who visit individuals in their own homes offering comfort, friendship and a caring face from St Kenelm's in times of bereavement, sickness, loneliness, or to anyone who feel they would benefit from a visit.

REVIEW OF 2009

  • After many years of preparation the Worcester West Rural Team became a reality.  A Shrove Tuesday social evening was arranged in February for the whole Team. Other events have followed throughout the year being hosted by different parishes.
  • John Sumner led a Quiet Day at Holland House at the end of February.
  • To celebrate Easter, encourage people to come and see the floral decorations and for fund raising, Pippa arranged one of her Cream Tea afternoons on Easter day. Although numbers were slightly down on the previous year over £100 was raised for St Kenelm’s and MacMillan Nurses.
  • Christian Aid week in May included a soup lunch at the Village Hall and a coffee morning at the Old Vicarage.
  •  A Horse and Pony show was held at the end of August. This proved a very popular and successful event raising over £1600 towards the roof fund. As well as a gymkhana there were many side stalls and events to attract people from a large area. We look forward to the next one…..
  •  The ancient boiler finally decided to call it a day. Replacing it was not particularly straightforward and several different systems were considered. It was finally up and running just before Christmas.
  • The choir went carol singing around the village. Everyone was invited to join in but, unfortunately, the weather meant that many people stayed at home.
  • The ice and snow also contributed to lower numbers at the Christmas services. It really was too dangerous on ungritted roads even if the car could be coaxed off the driveway.
  • Alice Sumner’s enthusiasm along with lots of willing volunteers has enabled the start up of two clubs in the village for the younger generation. The Music Art Drama group (MAD) is a 'Sunday' school for younger children on a Friday and, for the older ones a fortnightly secular youth club has started. Both are showing growing numbers.
  • Michael Snelling retired as Churchwarden after 13 years. As a mark of gratitude from the PCC he was presented with a book by John Sumner at the Benefice Service in June.
  • Singalong left the confines of the church on Remembrance Day and as well as joining in with others for the two minute silence had a good sing on the village green.
  • Money was an important issue once again; somehow ministry takes second place. Do we have our priorities wrong?  Should we just accept this is the modern church?

Payment of the quota when funds are low has always proved contentious within the PCC during interregnums. However, with a Priest in Charge in the Benefice it was felt that more effort should be made to pay at least part of the annual quota. £4400 of the quota was paid in 2009.
Mel Smith was invited to come and talk to the PCC about various ways of fundraising to enable us to pay more quota.

  •  Repair of the church roof has been the major concern this year. Bob Davis has spent many hours filling in forms, writing letters and generally coordinating the task of raising the £129,170 needed for the work. English Heritage will fund much of this and with the help of bequests and donations this amount should be achievable.

How can you help?
· Support the Church – many activities take place throughout the year. Please come along and support these services and functions.
· Covenant your giving or donations. There are white envelopes available for one off contributions and forms are available for regular giving. These allow us to enhance the amount you give by a tax refund of approximately 28% if you are a tax payer. This seems to be a logical way of obtaining finance from central government to provide local amenities.
· Donations either covenanted or not would be gratefully received.

If you would like further information please ask Bob Davis or any member of the P.C.C.

  • Dorothy Leavey died in June 2009. She had been unwell for sometime but continued to take choir practices and play at Sunday services until a few weeks before her death.
  • Pat Bradley offered to take on the post of choir mistress and with her leadership the choir is thriving. New members are always welcome. Pat is a musician but not an organist so other people have been asked to play at services and choir practices. With their help it has meant that the backup cd’s have to be used very rarely
  •  Congregation numbers have varied very little over the past two years.
