An extraordinary gospel choir of blind and visually impaired young people from Swaziland brought a taste of Africa to the children of Clifton Primary School who were treated to a special performance by members of the Swaziland choir 'Christ Worshippers Gospel Choir'. The choir, consisting of blind and visually impaired young people aged between 16 and 23, was visiting the UK for the first time during, bringing the vibrancy of African gospel singing to schools and churches across the West Midlands. Neil Higton, who helped organise the choir’s visit to Clifton, said: "There are no facilities for blind people at any of the colleges and the universities in Swaziland. Going into further education would mean spending a few thousand pounds to move to South Africa. Very few blind people in Swaziland are employed and there are no resource centres for them in the whole of the country either. Funds for the trip have been raised by Baptist church members and the local community and businesses. When the choir was told that all the funding had been raised for them to come to England they danced and sang throughout the night.”

The
Lion Inn has at last re-opened under a new management team headed by
Richard and Ann Giles, who came to the parishes with Richard's mother
Gwen, a retired priest who helps out with local church services. Although
initially they are only opening the bar, they have plans to refurbish
the kitchen, and serve good quality food. They also intend to open all
day, so that the pub can become a 'focal point' for the community once
again.

Mounting concern at the departure of the third tenants of the Lion
Inn in little over a year has prompted local residents to demand an
explanation from Avebury Taverns, the property company that owns the
building. The pub remains closed yet again after Paul and Pat Solway
left only days after taking over the tenancy last month, claiming
that Avebury had reneged on a pledge to re-equip and renovate the
kitchen. The previous tenants left in August saying they had been
forced to give up after a similar dispute with the owners.

A determined attempt to secure the future of Clifton's Village Hall is being made by a new team head by Rosemary Collie and Mike Pedersen, following a public meeting in June to discuss what should be done with the building.
"We want the Village Hall to become a real centre for the community," said Rosemary Collie, the newly-elected Chair of the Village Hall Committee. "Doing nothing is not an option any longer, but we need local residents to contribute to the discussions about its future."

Two
Clifton couples were the lucky recipients of tickets to Jubilee concerts
at Buckingham Palace during the Queen's 50 year Jubilee celebrations
at the beginning of June.
Matthew and Julia Haywood (pictured left inside the palace forecourt)
attended the Party at the Palace on the Monday.
"After making our way through the crowds, we arrived at the
south entrance to the Palace and passed through security checks into
the forecourt where we were watched by onlookers on the other side
of the gates," said Julia on her return home. "We entered
the Palace gardens through the magnificent Grand Hall, into the Marble
Room, through the Bow Room and out onto the West Terrace where we
sat and enjoyed our hamper. We eventually took our seats and enjoyed
the concert of a lifetime, performed by some of the world's greatest
musical artists. We felt really honoured to have been there."
Their good luck was also shared by Paul and Sally-Ann Fletcher who
got tickets to the classical concert at the Palace on the Saturday
evening, attended by 12,000 people inside the gardens.

The Clifton Village Hall Committee Room has had to close temporarily
due to the shock discovery that about a quarter of the floor has begun
to collapse. A very recent inspection of rotting joists means that
over the last few weeks anyone using the hall would have been sitting
almost on thin air! Remedial work will shortly take place but this
will not affect the Main Hall and other rooms.
This unfortunate event highlights the need to consider the future
of the Village Hall, and the Hall Committee will shortly be issuing
a survey in the parish, asking parishioners what they would like to
see the building used for. Dances, discos, wedding receptions, meetings,
doctors surgery, indoor bowls and tennis are suggestions so far but
what do you want for your Village Hall? Watch out for the survey
form - there is a £25 prize draw entry for those who make a
return.
